The case for going solid
The mid-century houses of Johnson County are the argument for solid hardwood: seventy year old oak floors still taking sandings and still gorgeous. Solid wood holds four to six refinishes across its life, which means the floor we nail down this year is realistically the last floor that room ever needs. Solid wants the right conditions: a wood subfloor above grade and stable indoor humidity. Prep and protection
Furniture moved, vents sealed, adjacent rooms masked off. Wood acclimates on site so boards settle before they are fastened, not after.
The work itself
The crew that quotes the job does the job. Boards laid tight, sanding done in stages, finish applied in thin even coats with real cure time between them.
The walkoff
We walk the finished floor with you board by board. Anything you flag gets fixed before we call it done, and the site gets left cleaner than we found it.
Why solid fails when it fails
Nearly every solid hardwood horror story traces to moisture at install time. Wood delivered and nailed the same day, no acclimation, no meter readings, then the first humid summer cups every board in the house. The fix is boring discipline: measure the wood, measure the subfloor, wait until they agree, then fasten. We have walked away from install dates rather than nail wet wood, and that decision has never been wrong.
The other classic failure is solid wood in the wrong place: below grade, over slabs without proper substrate, in sunrooms with wild humidity swings. When your project calls for wood somewhere solid does not belong, we will say so and point you at engineered, which exists exactly for those rooms.

With refinishing every fifteen to twenty five years, a century is realistic. The oak floors in the metro's 1920s homes are proof you can walk on. It is the last floor most rooms ever need.
What species do you recommend for families with dogs?
White oak and hickory lead the pack: hard, grain that hides scratches, and finish-friendly. We will talk you honestly out of soft woods like pine or American cherry if your household runs at high paws-per-hour.
Why does the wood need to sit in my house before install?
Because wood is still breathing. It has to reach equilibrium with your home's humidity before fastening, or it will move afterward, as gaps or cupping. We meter it and install when the numbers say so, usually within several days.
Site-finished or prefinished solid, which should I choose?
Site-finished gives one glass-flat monolithic surface and unlimited color control, at the cost of finishing days. Prefinished installs faster with a factory-cured finish, but keeps micro-bevels between boards. We lay out both and let your priorities pick.
Can solid hardwood go in my kitchen?
Yes, kitchens are fine for solid wood with a good finish and prompt attention to spills. Full bathrooms and below-grade rooms are where we redirect you to more waterproof options.
