Tile is the most permanent floor in the house, which cuts both ways: a well-set tile floor serves for fifty years, and a badly set one annoys you every single day of them. We set the first kind.
Setting tile the trade-school way
Good tile work is invisible: joints that line through doorways, cuts that sit symmetric against walls, a field so flat a marble will not roll. Getting there is all preparation. We verify the structure can carry tile stiffly enough that grout will not crack, install the right backer or membrane, and snap layout lines so the pattern lands centered where your eye enters the room, with cut tiles hidden along the quiet walls.
Then the setting itself: full mortar coverage checked by lifting tiles as we go, leveling systems on large formats so edges never lip, movement joints where the spec demands them. None of this shows in the finished photos. All of it decides whether the floor is still perfect when the kids graduate.

Tiles set level with consistent joints, cuts kept tight at edges and penetrations, grout worked clean and sealed once cured.

Joint lines checked with you, haze buffed off, leftover tile boxed and labeled for future repairs.
Why tile cracks, and why ours does not
Cracked tile and crumbling grout lines are almost never the tile’s fault. They are movement from underneath: bouncy subfloors, skipped backer board, mortar spread thin to save minutes. Tile is rigid and honest, and it reports every shortcut below it, eventually and permanently. Our first visit includes stomping around your subfloor for exactly this reason. If the structure needs stiffening before tile, you will hear it from us before you have spent a dollar on porcelain.
The other quiet failure is missing movement joints. Buildings breathe, and a tile field with nowhere to flex tents up dramatically, usually in year two or three. The fix costs a strip of caulk during install. We include it because we have seen the alternative.

A typical bathroom runs two to three days; kitchens and larger fields run three to five, including prep, setting, cure time, and grout. Tile cannot be rushed between stages, and we schedule honestly around that.
Can you tile over my existing floor?
Occasionally, over sound, flat, well-bonded tile or slab. Most other surfaces come out first, because tile bonds are only as strong as what they grip. We check and tell you straight which situation you have.
What size grout lines should I choose?
Rectified porcelain can run tight lines around an eighth of an inch; handmade and natural materials want more. Beyond looks, joints are the floor's flex room, so there are engineering minimums we will not go below.
Are heated tile floors worth it?
In Kansas winters, most clients who have them say yes, loudly. Electric mat systems install under the tile at reasonable cost during new work. Adding heat later means redoing the floor, so decide now, not after.
How soon can we walk on new tile?
Foot traffic after roughly a day, grout the day after setting, and full heavy use once everything cures, typically two to three days end to end. We leave you a simple timeline in writing.
