When a tile floor is dated, damaged across the field, or stuck in 1994, replacement is the honest path. It is dusty, loud, structural work, and doing it cleanly is a service in itself.
Out with the old floor, properly
Tile demolition is the part of this trade nobody romanticizes: breaking out the old field, grinding the mortar bed flat, and hauling shocking amounts of debris, all while keeping the dust from annexing your home. We contain the work zone, run dust extraction on the grinders, and protect the paths in and out. The difference between a professional demo and a sledgehammer weekend shows up in your air vents for months.
What demolition reveals is the real value: the substrate’s actual condition. Old floors hide cracked slabs, rotted subfloor around long-gone leaks, and heights that never matched the adjacent rooms. All of it is fixable at its cheapest possible moment, before the new floor goes down. Then the new tile gets set with the full prep stack: backer or membrane, flat mortar, level field, correct joints.

Substrate prep
Cement board or membrane where it belongs, flat and fastened to spec. Tile is only as good as what it sits on.
Setting and grouting
Tiles set level with consistent joints, cuts kept tight at edges and penetrations, grout worked clean and sealed once cured.
The walkoff
Joint lines checked with you, haze buffed off, leftover tile boxed and labeled for future repairs.
What replacement jobs teach, at your expense or ours
The classic replacement surprise is height: old mud-set tile floors often sit tall, and removing them drops the floor enough that doorways, appliances, and toilet flanges all need adjusting. We measure and warn about all of it during the quote visit, because discovering it mid-job is how other crews generate change orders. Second lesson: do not set new tile over an old cracked slab without an uncoupling membrane. The crack always wins eventually, telegraphing up through fresh porcelain within a couple of seasons. The membrane is cheap insurance we consider non-negotiable over cracked slabs, and we will show you the crack that makes it necessary.

It is the dustiest job in flooring, which is why containment and extraction are not optional with us. Expect noise and activity for a day or two, and expect your house to stay livable throughout. That second part is the professional difference.
Can new tile go over the old tile instead?
Sometimes, when the old floor is flat, sound, and the added height will not wreck doorways and appliances. It saves demo cost where conditions allow. We assess honestly, because the wrong candidates for over-tiling fail expensively.
Will my floor height change after replacement?
Often slightly, especially replacing old thick mortar-bed floors. We plan transitions, appliance clearances, and door undercuts as part of the quote so nothing surprises you at the doorway.
How long does full tile replacement take?
Demo, substrate work, setting, and grout typically run four to six working days for a kitchen or large bath. Cure stages set the pace and we do not cheat them. Dates come in writing.
Could I switch from tile to another floor entirely?
Absolutely, replacement is the natural moment to change materials. Plenty of clients go from cold 90s tile to LVT or hardwood. Once demo is done, the substrate can carry whatever suits the room best.
