What waterproof honestly means
Modern waterproof floors, rigid-core vinyl planks and tiles chiefly, will not swell, warp, or delaminate from surface water. That is a real revolution for below-grade rooms, and it is why finished basements stopped being carpet-only spaces. But a waterproof plank is not a waterproof room: water can still travel through seams and edges to the subfloor. Our installs treat the floor as a system, with slab moisture testing, proper underlayment, and perimeter detailing in the rooms that need it.

Waterproof marketing deserves a translator. Waterproof, water-resistant, and splash-proof are different promises, and warranty terms behind them differ more. Some products void coverage below grade, others cap standing-water hours. Flood recovery gets the same honesty: waterproof flooring survives most events, but water that reached the subfloor must be dried before any floor goes back down. Rigid-core vinyl handles it best: planks come up, subfloor dries, planks go back down. Nothing else we install recovers that gracefully. Carpet, laminate, and hardwood below grade are all betting against the sump pump.
Is waterproof flooring good enough for a full bathroom?
Yes, with the perimeter and fixture edges detailed properly, which is where bathroom floor failures actually start. The field of the floor is the easy part.
Do I need waterproof flooring on my main level?
Kitchens and laundries benefit; living rooms rarely need it. We often split homes between hardwood in living spaces and waterproof vinyl in water-adjacent rooms. Each material where it earns its keep.
My basement slab feels damp. Can you still install?
We test rather than guess. Mild vapor is manageable with the right underlayment; active moisture is a drainage conversation first. The meter reading decides, and you see the number.
Waterproof laminate exists now too. Is it as good?
The newest water-resistant laminates are genuinely improved and fine for kitchens with prompt cleanup habits. Below grade or in true wet rooms we still specify rigid-core vinyl. The gap has narrowed; it has not closed.
