Custom Hardwood Flooring

Straight-lay oak is a fine floor. But when you want herringbone in the entry, a walnut border framing the dining room, or a medallion under the chandelier, you want a crew that does pattern work on purpose.

Pattern work is a different discipline

Custom floors run on layout math and tight tolerances. A herringbone field has to land centered and square to the room’s sightlines, a border has to resolve its corners cleanly, and every piece in a medallion is cut to fit exactly one place. We plan these floors on paper first, dry-lay the critical sections, and only then fasten. That is why our patterns meet walls evenly instead of dying into a skinny sliver at the doorway.

Material choices open up here too. Mixed species for contrast, wide planks with hand-scraped texture, reclaimed stock with story in it, custom stain schemes that shade from border to field. If you have a picture saved from somewhere, bring it. We will tell you exactly what it takes to build it in your house.

What the job includes

  • Layout drawings and on-floor dry lay before fastening
  • Herringbone, chevron, basket, and brick-set patterns
  • Borders, aprons, and feature strips in contrasting species
  • Medallions and inlays, stock or made to order
  • Species mixing and custom stain schemes
  • Site finishing that levels the whole composition into one floor

How the job runs

The walkthrough

Thiago comes out, looks at the floor and the subfloor, measures, and talks through what you actually need. You get a straight price in writing before anything starts.

Prep and protection

Furniture moved, vents sealed, adjacent rooms masked off. Wood acclimates on site so boards settle before they are fastened, not after.

The work itself

The crew that quotes the job does the job. Boards laid tight, sanding done in stages, finish applied in thin even coats with real cure time between them.

The walkoff

We walk the finished floor with you board by board. Anything you flag gets fixed before we call it done, and the site gets left cleaner than we found it.

Where custom floor money is well spent, and where it is not

Pattern work costs more because it takes more: more layout time, more cuts, more waste factor, more skill on the saw. It is worth it in the rooms where floors are architecture, entries, dining rooms, libraries, and it is often wasted in bedrooms and hallways where furniture and rugs hide the show. A smart custom project spends the pattern budget where eyes actually land, and we will help you draw that line.

One caution: patterns amplify installer error. A straight-lay floor forgives a sixteenth of an inch. Herringbone broadcasts it down the whole field. Ask anyone quoting pattern work to show you photos of their corners and borders, ours included. Craft shows up at the edges.

What working with us looks like

You deal with the owner, start to finish. Thiago quotes the job, the same crew does the work, and the site gets left clean enough that the only evidence we were there is the floor. Licensed, certified, insured, and honestly reviewed at 5.0 on Google. The company exists because Thiago wanted to treat every client like family, and fourteen years of referrals say the idea works.

Materials we stand behind

We buy wood through ProSource Wholesale, which does two things for you: contractor pricing on brand-name flooring, and access to the full catalog instead of whatever fits in a showroom. Oak, hickory, maple, walnut, and specialty species in solid and engineered construction, in widths from classic strip to wide plank. You look at real samples in your own light before anything is ordered.

Finishes get the same care. We work with commercial-grade waterborne and oil-modified systems, matte through gloss, and we will tell you honestly how each choice ages, shows dust, and handles your household. The cheapest material on the shelf and the most expensive rarely win; the right middle is where value lives, and we will show you where that is for your project.

How much more does herringbone cost than straight lay?

Meaningfully more, typically driven by added labor and waste factor rather than material. Exact numbers depend on the room and the wood, so we quote it against a straight-lay baseline so you can see the difference and decide room by room.

Can you do a custom floor in just one room?

Absolutely, and that is how most people do it. A herringbone entry or bordered dining room reads as intentional luxury. We handle the transition into adjacent straight-lay floors cleanly.

Where do medallions come from?

Both places: we order from specialty makers who cut them to spec, and for simpler designs we fabricate on site. Either way the medallion gets set flush and finished with the field so it feels born there, not dropped in.

Can custom floors use reclaimed wood?

Yes, and reclaimed stock with tight old grain makes spectacular feature floors. It takes more sorting and prep than new material, which we price honestly up front.

Do patterned floors refinish like normal floors?

Yes. A well-installed herringbone or bordered floor sands and refinishes just like straight lay, and the pattern comes back looking new. It is one more reason to have the install done right the first time.

How do I get a price for custom hardwood flooring?

Call (913) 915-3193 or send the contact form with a rough description of the rooms and what is on the floor now. Thiago comes out, looks at the actual conditions, measures, and hands you a straight price in writing, usually within a few days of your call. No pressure follows it, and the number does not mutate once work starts.
